Originally a coal cave and small coal mine opened in 1920 on the outskirts of Chongqing, it was later converted into a detention center by the Military Unification Bureau of the National Government.
Surrounded by mountains on three sides and facing a gully on one side, Zhazidong is hidden in a secluded terrain. It was specially used to detain and persecute revolutionaries, with the most famous being “Sister Jiang” (Jiang Zhuyun).
Zhazidong was restored and rebuilt on its original site, truly reflecting the scenes of that time. The atmosphere is oppressive, and the displayed torture instruments are shocking.
The entire scenic spot is not large. You can visit the Martyrs’ Cemetery and Bai 公馆 (Bai Mansion) together, and the scenic area also arranges special bus routes, which is very convenient.
